The Ministry in Dialogue with Industry

The Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr Ebrahim Patel met with the leadership of the auto sector, accompanied by Deputy Ministers Ms Nomalungelo Gina and Mr Fikile Slovo Majola.

This was part of the deepening dialogue between government and industry leaders, to strengthen efforts at growth and job creation.

The business delegation consisted of the CEOs of local vehicle manufacturers and the leadership of their association, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA).

Minister Patel stated government's commitment to working in partnership with the industry in the implementation of the Automotive Masterplan 2035.

The Masterplan's objective is to increase local content sharply, from 39% to 60%, double its annual car-production to 1.4million units, expand employment opportunities to 224 000 people and to enhance the local industry's competitiveness.

The meeting discussed new technologies and the impact of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement on the industry.

NAAMSA represents 41 members within the automotive sector consisting of the local Original Equipment Manufacturers and importers and distributors of passenger and light commercial vehicles plus local and international assemblers and manufacturers of heavy commercial vehicles [trucks and busses].

Minister Patel will deliver a keynote address at this year’s NAAMSA Automotive Conference taking place on the 22nd August 2019 at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit under the theme of re-imagining the future, together. The NAAMSA Conference will be followed by the weekend long Festival of Motoring event from Friday 23 August to Sunday, 25 August 2019.
