of policies, programs and projects of the dti. The unit is in the process
of starting to assess the effectiveness of key dti policies and programmes
and will soon be cooperating with units across the dti to set up appropriate
monitoring and evaluation systems.
The Policy Coordination (External relations) unit seeks to leverage
strategic partners in support of the dti's objectives. The unit
engages in structured programmes of engagement aimed to facilitate improved
decision making and improved policy consistency amongst the department's
partners and stakeholders. The unit manages intergovernmental relations and
stakeholder management programmes that the dti is active in such as
NEDLAC's Trade and Industry Chamber, the Industry Forum and Provincial
MinMecs. The unit is also responsible for the interaction of the dti in
the Fosad Economic Cluster and coordinates interdepartmental Directors-General
Bilaterals.
The Policy Analysis and Management Unit involves the examination and
interpretation of data and other information, both qualitative and quantitative,
to provide insights to improve the formulation of policy and the delivery of
services. This unit also deals with parliamentary questions, speeches, media
briefings and reviewing of cabinet memoranda.
The Research Management Unit
The purpose of Research Management unit is to conduct and manage high
quality strategic policy-oriented research across the dti. The
business unit also ensures that research activities in the dti
are well coordinated and research duplication is completely eliminated.
The unit is also responsible for the development and implementation of
the dti and economic cluster research agenda in consultation with
relevant stakeholders. The Research Management unit houses the Knowledge
Management function that maintains and develops knowledge repositories,
identifies and forms links with sources of strategic knowledge inside and
outside of the organisation and forms a "one stop shop" for multiple
knowledge and information needs.
The Statistical Analysis and Modeling Unit.
The vision of the SAM sub-unit is to focus on evidence based policy
making by using accurate and reliable data, data analysis, developing
statistical and economic models as tools for measurement of both
economic and social progress and to ensure policy coherence and
certainty in support of growth, employment and equity. Through this
function, the unit wants to make the dti an authoritative
voice on the economy and to ensure that the department's economic
and solid quantitative base underscores policy analysis.
