South African National Accreditation System (SANAS)
 

Overview

SANAS is established in terms of Section 3(1) of the Accreditation for Conformity Assessment Calibration and Good Laboratory Practice Act, 2006 (Act No. 19 of 2006). SANAS has its office at the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) Campus, Sunnyside, Pretoria, South Africa. It is directed and legally represented by a Board of Directors, whose members are appointed by the Minister of Trade and Industry.

The objectives of SANAS are to:

  1. accredit or monitor for GLP compliance purposes, organisations falling within its scope of activity;
  2. promote accreditation as a means of facilitating international trade and enhancing the Republic's economic performance and transformation;
  3. promote the competence and equivalence of accredited bodies; and
  4. promote the competence and equivalence of GLP compliant policies.
The Board delegates to the CEO of SANAS the responsibility of implementing the SANAS policies and objectives. Approval Committees make decisions concerning the granting and continuation of accreditation and GLP compliance.
